Fewer than 1 in 6,002 adults in the United States meet the minimum recommendations for potassium and sodium.

That isn’t a typo. It’s 99.99%.

We are failing our bodies on two fronts simultaneously. We aren’t eating enough potassium. We’re drowning in too much sodium. And the results are measurable.

The Four Deadly Dietary Traps

Four out of the five biggest killers in modern diets aren’t about eating too much sugar or fat. They are about eating too little.

We don’t get enough:
1. Whole grains.
2. Fruits.
3. Nuts and seeds.
4. Vegetables.

But the worst offender? Salt.

High sodium intake is roughly 15 times deadlier than consuming too much soda. Just for perspective.

Health organizations are screaming for change. They want warning labels on salt shakers. Messages like: “Too much sodium causes high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. Limit your use.”

Inflammation And Autoimmune Diseases

It’s not just blood pressure. Sodium drives inflammation.

Take multiple sclerosis (MS). This autoimmune condition causes nerve damage. Patients with medium to high sodium intake have three to four times more exacerbations than those eating less than one teaspoon of salt daily.

In lupus—a serious inflammatory autoimmune disease—we see higher sodium levels directly in the tissues. In MS patients, high sodium correlates with decreased structural integrity in the spinal cord.

Why does this happen?

We don’t fully know yet. But part of the mechanism may involve damage to the gut microbiome. The friendly flora in your intestines gets wrecked by excessive salt.

The Evolution Mismatch

Here is the trap we are walking into.

Our bodies evolved to handle about 750 milligrams of sodium per day. That was our natural limit.

The American Heart Association says stay under at least 1,500 milligrams. Twice our evolutionary intake.

But Americans are eating four times that natural amount. More than four times.

And it’s getting worse.

Over the last decade, intake has climbed. In fact, even back when this data was collected (more than 10 years ago), 98.8% of Americans exceeded the 1,500 mg limit.

So what about potassium?

Potassium lowers blood pressure. It counters sodium. We evolved consuming over 10,000 milligrams a day. From fruits and vegetables. From wild plants.

The recommendation? Around 4,700 milligrams. Half of our ancestral diet.

Less than 2% of U.S. adult potassium intake hits that mark. Over 98% of Americans are deficient.

Put the guidelines together. Sodium goals and potassium goals met by fewer than 0.00015 of the population.

That’s the 1 in 6,009 statistic.

Most of us are eating potassium-deficient diets while flooding our systems with salt found in crappy, processed foods.

Are Salt Substitutes The Answer?

If you stop adding table salt, what do you use?

Potassium chloride.

It looks like salt. It tastes like salt. But it swaps out the sodium for potassium.

Seems too easy. Is there a catch?

Are potassium-based salt substitutes like the ones discussed in recent health analyses actually safe for everyone? Are they effective at lowering blood pressure?

For the vast majority, switching from sodium chloride to potassium chloride is the most logical step. But it isn’t risk-free for people with kidney issues or certain medications.

The science suggests that cutting sodium works. Over 100 randomized controlled trials prove that blood pressure drops when you remove added salt. The more you cut, the better it gets.

But changing a lifelong habit is hard. We’ve been salted into submission by a food system that prizes preservation and flavor over longevity.
