Understanding bursitis: causes, symptoms and joint pain relief

A joint is more than just a rigid hinge. These are complex systems designed to keep you going. At the center of this mechanism is the bursa. These are small fluid-filled sacs located between bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. You don’t see them. You almost never feel them. But they are necessary.

The bursa acts as a cushion. Reduces friction. This allows the tissues to slide over each other without grinding. Think of it like the grease in your car engine. Without this, metal scrapes metal. With it, things will go smoothly.

When the bursae become inflamed, the system stops working. This inflammation is called bursitis. It is a common cause of joint pain. It turns smooth movements into grinding, painful stops.

What happens when bursa becomes inflamed?

Bursitis is not a disease. This is a reaction. This happens when the bursa becomes swollen and painful. Liquid collects inside. The walls thicken. As a result, range of motion is lost.

Symptoms are specific. You may feel pain. It can become sharp if moved. Dull pain may occur at rest. Swelling is common. The area may feel warm to the touch. In this case, the body’s immune response goes into overdrive.

Why does this happen? Friction is usually suspected. The pads wear out as a result of repeated movements. A sudden impact can cause injury. Infections can enter. It can also be triggered by an underlying disease, such as arthritis or gout.

Which joints are most commonly affected?

Bursitis can occur in any joint. But there are also places that are more vulnerable.

  • Shoulder: Subacromial bursa is a common cause. May cause shoulder impingement. Lifting your arm becomes painful.
  • Elbow: Also known as “student’s elbow” or “miner’s elbow”. It comes from leaning against a hard surface. The olecranon bursa is swollen.
  • Hip joint: Trochanteric bursitis affects the outside of the hip joint. It hurts to lie on that side. Walking uphill can make this condition worse.
  • Knee: Prepatellar bursitis is “housemaid’s knee”. This is often caused by kneeling. The front of the knee swells visibly in the front of my knee.
  • ** Heel: ** Retrocalcaneal bursitis is located behind the Achilles tendon. Running or jumping can make the symptoms worse.

How to Treat Bursitis Naturally

Most cases resolve with conservative treatment. Surgery is not always necessary. Strong drugs are not always necessary.

  1. Rest: Stop the activity that causes irritation. Give the bursa time to heal.
  2. Ice: Use a cold pack for 15-20 minutes. Reduces inflammation.
  3. Compression: Use a bandage to reduce swelling.
  4. Elevation: Keep your joints above heart level. Drain the fluid.

This is called the RICE method. It works for acute injuries. It is also useful in chronic attacks.

When to see a doctor

Not all joint pain is bursitis. Some symptoms may require immediate attention.

If you have a fever, chills or red streaks spreading from the joint, seek medical attention immediately.
