We think we make choices. Most of the time we are just reacting to patterns. That is the core insight of conditioning. It is not magic. It is a process where the frequency or predictability of a behavioral response increases through reinforcement. Think of a stimulus or a reward for the desired response. The brain wires itself around the loop.
There are two main ways this happens. They are often confused. They are distinct.
Classical conditioning and stimulus substitution
The first type is classical conditioning. Also called respondent conditioning. It relies on stimulus substitution. This concept comes from the work of Ivan Pavlov. He was a physiologist studying digestion. He noticed something odd in his lab.
He rang a bell every time he presented food to dogs. The food caused salivation. This is an unlearned response. But Pavlov kept ringing the bell. Eventually the dogs started salivating when they heard the bell. They did not need the food odor anymore. The bell became the conditioned stimulus. Salivation became the conditioned response.
This is not just about dogs. It explains why a song can make you sad. Why the smell of antiseptic makes you tense. The brain links two things. It predicts one based on the other.
Instrumental conditioning and operant behavior
The second type is instrumental conditioning. Also known as operant conditioning. It works differently. Here a spontaneous behavior is either rewarded or punished. The behavior itself changes. It is not a reflex. It is an action.
B.F. Skinner studied this in detail. He put animals in boxes. He pressed levers. When the lever press resulted in a food pellet, the behavior increased. The animal learned. When it resulted in a shock, the behavior decreased.
Reward reinforces. It makes a behavior more likely to happen again. Punishment suppresses. It makes the behavior less likely. This is how habits form. It is also how they break.
Why this distinction matters
People often mix these up. They should not. Classical conditioning is about association. It is automatic. It happens to you. Operant conditioning is about consequences. It is voluntary. You do it.
Understanding this split helps explain human behavior. It shows how environments shape us. It does not remove free will. It just reveals the wires behind the switch.
